"May your mouth be blessed..."To put it simply, we can split 90s black metal regarding the sound. The Norwegian/Swedish scene by one hand and the Greek/Mediterranean style on the other. Due to different factors that I’m not going to get into, the last one has been eclipsed by the other. RC, Zemial, M13D or the bands featured here crystallize this part of the underground. For the unaware, Necromantia are one of the most original bands using an 8-string bass for the riffage, though it’s played like a guitar. They replace guitar, but it’s exclusively used for the solos.Songs featured here are taken from their demo “Vampiric Rituals”. The first two tracks are classics from the band. Tempo it’s not too fast, they are catchy. I wish you good luck trying to forget “Feast of Ghouls” from your head.“Evil Prayers”, takes the lyrics from Remi de Gourmount homonymous poem. Opening with a piano line, different percussion compared to the prior drumming, reciting – whispered with clean voices – compared to the black metal vocals used along the album and a saxophone solo in the middle of the track crowning this opus. Brilliant! It’s something which I haven’t found in almost any band, much less in the ‘92. In my opinion, this track proves band heteredoxy, intelligence, ability, precision to solve and manage compositions along with experimentations like this without loosing any feeling on it. Varathron is another significant Greek act in which some Rotting Christ members – its drummer is playing on this split and their bass player will be featured on its first album – are involved.Atmosphere serves to define both bands on the vinyl. Structure regarding the order of the songs and its package comes again with an introduction where you have one of the landmarks of the band, Stefan’s harsh vocals with some gutturals on it. Each instrument it’s pretty audible. The riffage has trhashy vibes seasoned with Celtic Frost magic on it. Some solos are more successful than others, I miss more colour on it, yet I’m aware they are still exploring their instruments. I’d like to point out the intro on “La Reine Noir” for its arrangements and way to play it. Scales and ideas that were mainly developed by Mediterranean black metal at the time. Sometimes fantasize with the idea of not having all this internet overinformation, only zines and to just sit and listen to this kind of stuff. My advice it’s to grab the album, dissociate your mind from what you’ve read, catch the stars and the ocean, pay attention to the lyrics and enjoy the journey.Necromantia 91% // Varathron 84%Total: 85 / 100 P.S.: Regarding the edition (2015 vinyl), I personally like this one more than the others due to respecting the original inlay and artwork. Also, other releases have added more tracks on it. Necromantia includes “De Magia Veterum”, one of the most experimental songs on BM which I like. Problem comes with Varathron, adding two songs after the outro harming the final product in my opinion.

This is a bootleg, the artwork is darker and less resolution. Says made in Columbia in runout of the disc.

This is an bootleg version? Have some doubt about this
